Europe : Mobility for all - Laetitia Bourgeois, French apprentice in Spain
Parcours
Hi, my name is Laetitia, I'm 20. I'm studying to be a motorbike mechanic. I'm doing a course in St Sebastien as part of a Leonardo project. Everything is laid on: accommodation, meals, and board. Here's the accommodation. Stop! We've reached my room. This is it. A room for two girls to share. We have a balcony with a nice view. The city of St Sebastien... After 4th form, I didn't know what to do. I have a passion for motorbikes, I love manual work, so why not do motorcycle mechanics? I have two more courses to do: one in Spain and one in France. Here's a glimpse of my morning drudgery. You have to be patient. I'm turning left at the roundabout. The point of this relocation course is to show that you can travel. Hello! A boss seeing your CV will think, "She's mobile, she's been abroad." You can fit the number plate... You need to be more diligent here than in France. There are no parents to send you off to work. I think it gives you more in terms of maturity and stretches your limits. These are done. Change the ones on the other side. When I have difficulties, I try to use gestures or similar words, words I know that might help me. Clients are surprised to see a girl but it isn't a problem. They're just as satisfied. Being a woman doesn't make the work any harder for me. Sometimes you need brute strength and I don't have enough. I ask for help, it's no trouble. After my exams, my plan is to go into competition mechanics. If I can't do that, I'd like to go to Italy or maybe England. See you tomorrow, Laetitia! It's 7pm, I've just knocked off. After work, it's time to relax. I'll take a shower, then go out for a drink. This is a tapas bar. There are four of us. Me... Cyril... We're going to have a drink and eat some tapas. For youngsters like me, it's really good experience. Aside from the actual training, you experience other things, a different culture. They're really nice. Very good manners. And they're jokers. It's great. Any youngsters thinking of coming here should jump at the chance. We've left the restaurant. Here I am. It's raining, so we're hurrying home. It's the end of the day, we're going to bed. We're saying goodnight. Goodnight, guys! I'm going to bed too. See you tomorrow!
Passionate about motorbikes, Laetitia studies mechanics. She is now in San Sebastian (Spain) on a work placement as part of the European Leonardo program. She works as an apprentice in a garage, clearly showing that a woman can do this job.
