Europe : Mobility for all - Jon Duchinsky, British company director in France
Parcours
Hi, my name is Jon Dechinksi, I'm 33. I'm a fund-raising consultant. I help foundations to raise money. 6.50... time for the morning Eurostar. Here's my Eurostar ticket. Hat. A touch of British... and off we go. Meeting in London tonight, then on to Rotterdam. It's going to be a European day. I grew up in London. I studied in Manchester: French and Italian. Nothing to do with what I do now but I got to know France, spending a year as an assistant at a school in the South-West. I love arriving here, at St Pancras. This is on the way up to Baker Street. Eurostar to my right.... The right answer for you is not going to be the same answer that'll work for you. We all have to find our own answers to these questions. I went back to England to finish my studies, returning a year later. As is often the case, love played its part. In my case I had two loves: love for the country and love for a French girl I'd met in Manchester. I'm in Paris, the weather's nice. But I hate Paris taxis! You have to queue. I started a company that works with foundations, organisations, associations, private clients and companies, helping them instigate change. We build strategies with them, and implement them. So... This is home, in Montmartre. Montmartre is kind of a dream for the British. No, I don't think it applies... Hello! My home, and our office. So here we are, with Luc and Christine. Hello! It's also the office. We work in a virtual, modern way. We have a meeting with a client who works on international health. Starting up in France takes a lot of energy. I respect people who manage to start a business in France. It isn't easy. The culture doesn't help. It's simpler in England. More fluid. The French excel at conceptualizing. They have more trouble giving concrete expression to things and taking the necessary risks. Here we are, at day's end. I'm meeting a friend in a café. Meanwhile I'm finishing a few emails. Businesses nowadays need people with international experience, who are open to other cultures, other worldviews. So stick your neck out, step out of your comfort zone and challenge the world.
